About the Artist

William Alther grew up in West Texas, where he developed an interest in both art and the natural world at an early age. A former zoologist at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Alther is endlessly fascinated by the landscape and the creatures that live there. His honors include awards of excellence from Oil Painters of America and regular inclusion in Birds in Art and Society of Animal Artists exhibitions. His work is in the permanent collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and many private collections. He lives in Denver, Colorado, with his wife, Debbie.

Artist Questions

What artist inspires you? Why?

There are many and the list is always growing. Lately though, Edgar Payne has been a big one. I am sure a recent traveling exhibition of his work, and the associated book, has something to do with that.

How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?

Like most painters focused on the natural world, new ideas usually come from experiences in the outdoors.

Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?

A recent trip to Denali National Park and surrounding area gave me a few ideas, to say the least.
