About the Artist

William Acheff was born in Alaska in 1947 and spent his early years in a remote village of 200 residents. After three years of art classes in high school, he ignored the advice of his art teachers and did not attend art college. Instead, he went to barber college and eventually opened his own shop. In the barbershop, he met Roberto Lupetti, who invited Acheff to his drawing class. After six months, Acheff moved into his own studio, but still maintained guidance from Lupetti for the next three years. Restless, he ventured to New Mexico in 1973 and discovered the small, quiet art town of Taos. Armed with classical training, he developed what was to become a very distinct style, widely recognized, and admired.

Artist Questions

What artist inspires you? Why?

Andrew Wyeth's paintings have always inspired me. In 1973, in San Francisco, I saw a major exhibition of his work at the de Young Museum, and I was amazed by the silence in his work. So, paint your environment, the people, or the objects of your environment.

How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?

Usually an artifact sets my mind to formulating an idea or theme.

Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?

Can't say I travel much, so that would have to be my studio in the morning.
