About the Artist
Stephen Datz was raised in Loveland, Colorado. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design at Colorado State University, in 1992, and embarked on his career as a fine artist shortly thereafter. Working en plein air year-round, Datz translates his passion for the varied terrain, fleeting moods, and abstract rhythms of the Western landscape into paintings possessed of a distinctively personal visual style. Utilizing strong, dynamically structured design and vibrant, engaging color, Datz aims to share a sense of his experiences, and to foster an appreciation for the pleasure of solitude, the significance of silence, and the simple, abundant beauty of nature.
Artist Questions
What artist inspires you? Why?
My inspirations are the vast spaces, epic landforms, and dynamic, relentless elemental forces of the West. Why? Because every single day these muses provide me the gift of a moment of perfect, delighted wonderment, and then challenge me to get it down on canvas.
How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?
I don't think the ideas really come from me. I spend a lot of time just looking at the landscape, but without an agenda. I don't set out to paint a certain thing. I like to let ideas surface out of what I am seeing, because they are more interesting and exciting than anything I could invent and closer to the essential truth of the subject.
Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?
Colorado National Monument in a snowstorm. Red rock canyons, pinon, juniper, and fresh snow falling, with sunlight moving across the terrain in spots as the clouds and snow broke momentarily and then closed in again. It was utterly sublime.
