About the Artist

Rachelle Siegrist renders minute paintings in the historic tradition of miniature art. Her subjects vary from wildlife to portraiture and are painted in painstaking detail that amazes even when observed under a magnifying glass. "Exquisite Miniatures," an ongoing touring museum exhibition of 50 of Rachelle and her husband's paintings, premiered at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in 2010. The tour encompasses 14 different venues through 2014.

Artist Questions

What artist inspires you? Why?

I must say that I admire several of the old masters Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein and Peter Paul Rubens, as well as many other Renaissance, Flemish, and Dutch painters. They were indeed true masters of their medium, putting much planning, thought, and time into creating works that have amazed and inspired for many generations and continue to do so.

How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?

My inspiration always comes from something I see or encounter, of which I try to take several photographs. Keeping in mind what first inspired me about the subject or scene, I compose the miniature painting from one, or either a combination, of the photographs.

Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?

I recently visited the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida and found it a true inspiration, as it boasts an amazing collection of works done by the old masters. Walking through the gorgeous museum, I found myself continually being more amazed and impressed each time I entered another room! It was not just the art that so greatly impressed, but also the beautiful gardens and stunning architecture featured in each building as well. My painting in this year's show was inspired there!
