About the Artist

John Fawcett has spent his life studying and gaining inspiration from his subjects which is evident in his detailed images that often focus on the relationships between animals and people. A practicing veterinarian for over 20 years, he sold his practice in 1996 to fully devote himself to painting. His work has been included in the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show & Sale, Quest for the West, and Masters of the American West, where he won the 2006 and 2010 Autry National Center Award for Watercolor.

Artist Questions

What artist inspires you? Why?

N.C. Wyeth and his son Andrew, who told "stories" with their paintings and watercolors which, in my opinion, really makes the viewer think and draws them into the work.

How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?

Reading historical accounts of Native American life and visiting battlefields and monuments throughout the West is where I come up with an idea. Then I set up scenes with models to recreate the story.

Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?

The most inspirational site I have visited is the Medicine Wheel in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. This sacred site has been visited by Native Americans for hundreds of years to give thanks and to obtain "good medicine."
