About the Artist
Carol Swinney paints with a palete knife instead of a brush, not only for the heavy paint textures and uniqueness of the tool, but for the depth that is created in her landscapes. She has won numerous awards and honors for her work, as well as many solo shows and group exhibitions over the past several years, including Gilcrease Museum, the Briscoe Museum, and the C.M. Russell Museum. She was featured in the January 2010 issue of Southwest Art, as well as in past issues of Art of the West, American Artist, International Artist, The Artist's Magazine and Art Talk. Carol's work is in the permanent collection of Grand Teton National Park, The Amerind Foundation and Art Museum and The Wyoming State Captitol Buildings.
Artist Questions
What artist inspires you? Why?
Besides, two men who mentored me for over 30 years, Greg McHuron and Bill Freeman, I am inspired by Carl Runigus and Bob Kuhn among other great impressionist landscape painters.
How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?
Many times it is dependent on what museum shows I am preparing for, but usually it comes from years of painting outdoors and seeing nature at it's most impressive. I then challenge myself to try to replicate some of that light and mood that I found so inspiring.
Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?
It would have to be Grand Teton National Park, otherwise, several years ago I was in awe of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona when I camped and painted for 5 days.
