What artist inspires you? Why?
I'm inspired by so many other artists that it is hard to pick one. admire great composition, fresh ideas, and a painterly style.
How do you come up with an idea for a new piece of artwork?
I come up with all my painting ideas by spending time outdoors with my subjects. Field work is a major part of my work flow. Typically I take photographs of animals and habitat while I am in the field for my main references. I stash some of my favorite photographs in a "painting ideas" folder for quick reference once it is time to start a new painting.
Where is the most inspirational place you've visited lately?
Recently I spent 14 days photographing snowy owls at Boundary Bay, Canada. The owls are very photogenic, and they are some of my favorite subjects. I also saw lots of other birds of prey species in the same area. I am sure several paintings will follow from these experiences.
